NEIGHBOURHOOD
Teakhout is located in Westerwatering, a spacious and green residential district just west of Zaandam station. Developed in the 1980s and 1990s, the neighbourhood is characterised by water, broad avenues and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere. The Murano complex forms the most urban part of the area: nine residential buildings with Italian names, arranged around intimate inner courtyards with a Mediterranean feel. You live here on the edge between city and open landscape. On one side the lively, recently renovated city centre of Zaandam with its iconic Inntel hotel and the Gedempte Gracht shopping street; on the other the open Zaan polder landscape with its meadows, waterways and windmills.
- Shops and supermarkets: Albert Heijn at Zaandam Station is about a 4-minute walk, the fully renovated Westerwatering shopping centre with Albert Heijn, drugstore, butcher and bakery is around 5 minutes by bike.
- Cafés and restaurants: the city centre of Zaandam with Hermitage Shopping, restaurants and bars is about a 5-minute walk via the station route.
- Schools and childcare: several primary schools within Westerwatering are reachable by bike in 5 minutes, with childcare facilities in the immediate vicinity.
- Parks and greenery: green spaces around the corner and the open Zaan polder landscape on the western side of the neighbourhood.
- Public transport and access: Zaandam station is about a 3-minute walk away, with intercity trains to Amsterdam Central in 12 minutes and direct connections to Schiphol, Alkmaar and The Hague. By car you reach the A7, A8 and A10 motorways within minutes.

HISTORY
The Murano complex is named after the Italian glass island near Venice, and that Mediterranean influence is reflected in the architecture itself: light, glass and clear sightlines around intimate inner courtyards. The nine residential buildings carry distinguished names from Italian culture and science — Galilei, Galvani, Vespucci, Volta, Bernini, Christofori. Murano was completed in 2012 as an entirely new urban district on the western side of the station, and has since formed a modern bridge between the historic centre of Zaandam and the green Westerwatering district.
